About Us

JoCare was established in 2013 as an initiative of St Joseph Catholic Parish and Cabrini Heath in Malvern Victoria, in recognition that loneliness and loss of community connection had adverse impacts on health and wellbeing, particularly in older adults. In 2020, JoCare – Caring for Neighbours, Inc became an independent Incorporated Association acting throughout Melbourne.
JoCare is funded by grants from the Commonwealth ACCVS and the City of Stonnington, and donations from Cabrini Health and private donors.
JoCare helps alleviate loneliness through organising Volunteer Visitors to meet with the people we serve, whom we call Neighbours, once or twice per fortnight. Neighbours may be on a government Aged Care package living in a Residential Aged Care facility, or may be living in their own home with or without a Support at Home care package. We are an inclusive organisation focused on the needs of the individual, not their funding.
As an example of our activities, in 2025, through the incredible generosity of our big-hearted Volunteers, we made more than 1000 hours of visits to 43 Neighbours, including 122 hours to help people needing digital assistance. With each visit, we provide a small moment of joy to the recipient, and, if we may say so, to the Volunteers also.
All aspiring Volunteers are vetted for suitability through personal interview and reference checks, Police checks and Working with Children check. Volunteers undergo a thorough training session on their role and requirements, what they can and cannot do for their Neighbours, legal requirements, insights into aging and health issues and how to record their visits on our customised software. After acceptability, Volunteers are matched with Neighbours, and after a supervised introduction visit, are encouraged to meet regularly.

The program leader and her assistant work part time and are supported by a talented Committee of Management who provide governance, financial and risk review, strategy and policy.
JoCare has developed strong relationships and work closely with aged care providers, community organisation and government stakeholders; this enables us to reach a wide and diverse range of recipients both in Aged Care facilities and in their own homes (see our list of companion organisations here). With a proven track record of delivering this program with compassion and reliability, JoCare enhances wellbeing and quality of life for older people who might otherwise remain isolated.
